A **medium-expansion foam generator (GPSS)** is part of an automated stationary fire suppression system for vertical cylindrical tanks containing flammable and combustible liquids.

The use of this equipment is mandatory in accordance with **PB 03-605-03** for extinguishing fires by the over-layer method. The flames are extinguished by a flat, film-forming foam stream that enters the tank through foam chambers located in the upper shell course. Foam generators must also be installed in a way that prevents them from being affected by flames and combustion products.

In tanks with a stationary roof, the foam is applied to the entire product surface. In tanks with a floating roof or pontoon, the foam enters the annular space between the tank wall and the metallic diaphragm of the floating roof or pontoon.

The effectiveness of air-mechanical foam lies in its ability to isolate the entire liquid surface from the flames, reduce the evaporation rate, decrease the volume of combustible vapors released, and cool the burning liquid.

According to **GOST 15150-69**, the generator is produced in **U and UHL climatic categories, placement category 1**.

DEVICE AND OPERATING PRINCIPLE

The foam generator's inlet is located on **flange 3**, to which the foam solution pipeline of the stationary fire extinguishing system **6** is connected. The foam generator is installed and secured on the tank using **mounting flange 2**, which has an outlet covered by **lid 9**, installed on **hinge 10**.

In front of **sprayer 8** is **damper 11**, which is one arm of a two-arm lever installed in the foam generator **body 1** on **hinge 12**. The other end of this lever is connected by **hinge 13** to **fork 14**. Additionally, the two-arm lever is connected by **cable 15** to the **manual drive handle 16**. With its free end, **fork 14** is installed on **stop 17**, secured in the foam generator **body 1** by **bolt 18**. **Rod 19** is connected at its ends to **lid 9 and 20**. **Lid 9** is pulled towards the edge of the foam generator's outlet by **rod 19** due to the force created by rotating **nut 21** along the thread of **stud 20**. In this position, **nut 21** rests its end face against **fork 14**. The position of **nut 21**, corresponding to the required sealing force of the joint between **lid 9** and the foam generator's outlet edge, is fixed on **stud 20** by **locknut 22**. An opening angle **limiter 23** for **lid 9** is connected to **stud 20** and **rod 19**. The second end of **limiter 23** is secured by a bolt to the upper part of the body. To protect the foam generator's lever system from damage, **fork 14** is secured (only during transportation) with **wire 24**.
